It’s tough enough maneuvering the stop-and-go intricacies of New York City traffic by car – now try doing it with restless kids in the back seat.

That’s why families, especially ones on a budget, usually go to great lengths to choose the right vehicle for their brood. But gone are the days when “family car” meant stuffy station wagons or clunky minivans.

Today’s family-friendly vehicles are fun to drive and can be loaded with the latest hi-tech toys – in addition to being safe, reliable and economical, says Jamie Page Deaton, managing editor of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Cars site.

Here are five of the top 18 winners in U.S. News’ 2012 Best Cars for Families awards.

The annual rankings, available at, were culled from a consensus of the nation’s top automotive experts and critics to help families with their buying decisions.

Category: Midsize SUV (three rows)

MSRP: $36,600 – $45,080

MPG: 17 city/24 highway

A comfortable, luxurious and capable family hauler with a quiet, refined interior and luxury-level ride.

“It has really good passenger space where nobody’s crammed, with a third row of seats that can handle adults and older kids in comfort.”
